Pretty Corny

Hi, everyone,

We're in South Dakota just outside the Badlands. We started the day at the Corn Palace (see pic) in Mitchell, SD. Photographs don't do it justice. It's fascinating they way they create the murals and do all the other decorating with corn and millet and a few other grasses. And, they do it from scratch every year (since 1892). It takes 100 acres of corn (12 different colors) each year. This year's theme is American Destinations and the murals include everything from the Golden Gate Bridge to The Gateway Arch, to Washington, D.C.'s monument.

We then started the long drive across S.Dakota along I-90. You would think that we would have tired of rolling hills and grazing cattle and vast expanses of earth and sky, but we couldn't take our eyes off the scenes. We saw many storms form on the horizon (and drove through several). I just can't describe how desolate it is, yet so calming. I've included a pic or two.

We're staying the night in an RV park called Circle 10 just north of the entrance to Badlands. Can't wait to drive the 35 mile circuit. We'll end up at Wall Drugs. From the signs along the way, it should be something to see.

My Verizon air card is working great so far. I use the computer to find RV parks as Joe is driving and at night I post to this blog. It's really neat.

Hope everyone is well.

Carolyn

  1. Looks like a really cool place. I'm headed for near Pittsburgh this afternoon. Flying back Saturday afternoon...Going to be a long, quick trip.

Y'all are making me jealous. Are y'all headed for Mt. Rushmore at some point? How does the trailer pull? I assume y'all prefer it over the RV? I'm also trying to feel people out concerning which is better....

    Keep writing...I'm really enjoying it...
